T White’s Bikes

A photo essay by Tony Nyberg

Back in late 2009 I began a photo essay for Metro magazine (published in early 2010) on the fixed gear cycling scene in central Auckland. I had been cycling in Auckland for about ten years and noticed an explosion in the scene. What had initially appeared to be just a few loners on the roads was now a full blown community based around Tim’s shop in Symonds Street. The idea for the essay was to create a snapshot of the culture and friendship existing between the crews, both fixed gear and BMX, that are connected to the shop. As the scene continued to evolve, Tim and I decided to produce a book that recorded this early time.
